RULES

Locks fitted to old houses ranged down the scale of quality the further they were from the front door and the main rooms of the building. Important rooms such as the drawing room and dining room were fitted with good quality rimlocks or mortice locks while lesser rooms and servants' rooms were provided with the cheapest locks that would do the job.
